“One of the earliest knitted items I have ever made was a black ribbed hat for my husband, Marcel. More than 10 years later, he still wears it – and reports that many of his friends have asked for its provenance.

This type of hat is known as a seaman’s hat; the accompanying scarf is also inspired by seamen’s scarves and is meant to function as a tidy layer to be worn under peacoats or sweaters.
